Bedtime Story Anyone?

I’m a sucker for all things mystical, mythical and magical: fairies, mermaids, angels, ogres, trolls, vampires, witches and wizards.  That’s why I enjoyed this movie about a sea nymph on a quest to provide inspiration to someone who will have a great impact in the world.  Plus I really like Paul Giamatti.  He’s so quirky!

NON SPOILER SUMMARY

An apartment building superintendent finds a very odd young woman in the pool.  By piecing together bits of an unusual story, he learns that she is a sea nymph, and that she is on a mission to provide an “awakening” to someone that lives in the complex.  He enlists the help of some eccentric residents in keeping her safe and helping her to accomplish her task.

CIN’S REVIEW

I liked this movie much better the second time I watched it.  I guess that really is the case with all of M. Night Shyamalan’s movies, watching them the second time you pick up on all the subtle hints that are hidden in the storyline.  Lady In The Water was a bit different than his previous films, but still lives up to all of the standards set for mystery and climax building.  The characters are all people that live in the apartment building, and the entire movie is filmed there, yet there is no lack in creativity, personality or scenery.  In fact, it just adds to the charm of the story.

Also fun to watch on the DVD extras was the featurette explaining how Shyamalan came up with this unique idea for a movie.  It actually started out as a bedtime story for his children, then he wrote it as a children’s book.
