The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters is the story of one man’s dream to set a world record on the Donkey Kong arcade game.

DO YOU REMEMBER ARCADES?

I’m not talking about the arcades that still exist in movie theaters or the local mall, oh no – I’m talking about the smoke-filled, music-pounding, rip-roaring hangouts from the 1980s! Those were good times baby! I spent many a weekend night (and many a quarter!) trying my best to get my initials on the hi-score screen for many of those golden oldies: Satan’s Hollow, Pac-man, Sinistar, Tron and many others. Curiously, though, I never cared very much for Donkey Kong. Here’s the story of somebody who did – decades after its prime. You didn’t even know it was still being played did you?

MOVIE INFO

  • Starring: Steve Wiebe, Billy Mitchell, Walter Day
  • Rated: PG-13 for a brief sexual reference
  • Released: 2007
  • Genre: Documentary
  • My Opinion: Excellent!

NON SPOILER SUMMARY

Steve Wiebe has just been laid-off from Boeing. Sucks to be him! Now with extra time on his hands he is trying a few different things in life like teaching science, attending night school and playing Donkey Kong on an original upright arcade game. Sounds like fun doesn’t it? It is… until he learns about the Donkey Kong world record set 20 years ago, a record which he believes he can beat. Thus it begins. Steve and his family are sucked into a shady web of mystery and intrigue as he chases his goal. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll be really pissed off at the cocky Billy Mitchell who does everything in his power to stop Steve from besting his own high score. Oh the injustice!

RUSTY’S REVIEW

  • I am a fan of documentaries, so of course I liked this show – a documentary about a cool arcade game!
  • I am also a geeky fan of both video games and all things 1980s – so that helps my enthusiasm too!
  • Yet, despite all that, this movie really is cool. The story of Steve’s battle with Billy was quite emotional. They did a nice job with that.
  • Don’t just take my word for it – many other people have listed this as one of the 10 best films of 2007.
