A BREATH OF FRESH AIR!

In the midst of all the paranoid craziness going on in the USA, it is absolutely refreshing to see a movie about how people can overcome their fears of “foreigners” and reach out to those who need help. This movie, while not all sunshine and happiness, touched something inside of me and made me realize that deep down we are all just humans who need a little assistance once in a while.

NON SPOILER SUMMARY

Walter Vale is a widowed and lonely college professor. When his boss sends him to New York City to participate in a conference, he is surprised to find a young couple living in his Manhattan apartment. Even more surprising is the fact that they are illegal immigrants who were tricked into renting Walter’s apartment from a swindler. After the initial shock wears off, Walter allows Tarek and Zainab to remain until they can find somewhere else to live. His kindness touches Tarek, who teaches Walter to play the hand drums and the two of them begin an unusual friendship as Tarek drags the aging, white Walter to the jam sessions with all his young friends. But just as things are going good, Tarek gets in some trouble which lands him in a detention center. Now it is up to Walter and Tarek’s worried mother to help him before things really go down hill.

RUSTY’S REVIEW

  • I am more a fan of deep, thinking movies that make subtle commentary about society. This film fits the bill, and ranks high on my list of all-time favorite movies.
  • This is one of those shows that makes you really think about what you would do in a similar situation. Think about it – would you let a couple of total strangers live with you?
  • Gosh darn if Richard Jenkins acting wasn’t just phenomenal! In fact this role earned him a nomination for Best Actor in the 2009 Academy Awards.
  • This movie also won director Thomas McCarthy the 2008 Independent Spirit Award for Best Director.
