Moon is a mind bending movie about astronaut Sam Bell, who is nearing the end of his three year contract working alone at a lunar station.

  • Starring: Sam Rockwell
  • Rated: R for language and mild gore.
  • Released: 2009
  • Genre: Science Fiction, Drama, Mystery
  • My Opinion: A fascinating trip!

Sam Bell has a job on the far side of the moon.  He loves it, but he is ready to go home to his wife and daughter.  He’s been alone for three years, with only messages from Earth and the stations computer, Gerty (voiced by Kevin Spacey), to keep him company.  Unfortunately, Sam has an accident, and strange things start to happen.  Hallucinations, disorientation, paranoia.  Even Gerty is worried that Sam is becoming unstable.  Will he be able to hold it together for two more weeks until his job is finished?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the eerie quiet in movies like this.  The solitude and vastness of space is the perfect setting for something spooky to happen.  I also LOVE LOVE LOVE movies that don’t ruin that ambiance by throwing in green blood and guts and severed bug-alien heads.  I think psychological fear is much scarier than aliens and violence.  Moon definitely falls into the category of “mind bending”, and does not leave you hanging at the end.  Sam Rockwell did an amazing job portraying the main character and his various states of delusion.  I was completely engrossed in this movie and give Moon two enthusiastic thumbs up!
