Looking for the best movies to watch on Netflix Instant Streaming?  This week I recommend: Secretariat, an excellent family movie about a woman who put her money, time and energy into her father’s racehorse, and won the Triple Crown Championship in 1973.

I have been on a horse 2 times.  And that was 2 times too many.  My first time, all I remember is horse shit.  The second time, horse snot, all over my face and arms as the horse galloped and I held on for dear life.  I was bruised black and blue from my knees clear up to my girlie parts for weeks afterwards.  Ouch.  So, even though I’m not a fan of horses, I do enjoy a good horse movie every now and then…

  • Starring: Diane Lane, John Malkovich
  • Rated: PG for brief mild language.
  • Released: 2010
  • Genre: Drama, Family, Inspirational, Animals
  • My Opinion: A wonderful family movie!

Secretariat is based on the true story of Penny Chenery who took over her father’s stables when he became too ill to do so.  She discovers that he believed a horse’s abilities came from both parents, whereas most people felt only the fathering stud passed on good genes.  So she takes a chance with her father’s colt, hoping it will be blessed with speed and endurance.  If so, Secretariat could save her financial downfall, as well as inspire her family with much needed hope.

Disney made such a fuss of this movie when it was released that I was very resistant to watching it.  Bleh!  However, when it showed up in my Netflix Instant Queue suggestions, my kids thought it looked good, so we went ahead and made the jump.  And I’m glad we did!  I love Diane Lane, she is one talented actress.  And John Malkovich alone made the movie worth watching with his wit and quirky humor!  There is alot more going on in this story besides the racehorse, so it was interesting off the track as well.  I highly recommend Secretariat to watch with your family, you’ll all come away feeling uplifted.

If you liked Secretariat, you might also like Seabiscuit, starring Jeff Bridges and Tobey Maguire, another inspiring racehorse movie.
