Summer isn’t just for hours by the pool, time at amusement parks and a break from school and routine. It’s also when Hollywood pulls out all the stops with its summer releases. Here is a break-down of the top summer movies you should make a point to see in 2013.

  1. The Great Gatsby (May 10)

This book turned movie starring Leonardo DiCarprio, Tobey McGuire, Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton takes place in 1922 New York- a time of indulgence, prosperity and deception. It’s the perfect mix of actors, with the storyline full of love and excitement, which will have everyone, not just those who love the book, enticed by its drama and ready to see it again and again.

  1. Star Trek: Into Darkness (May 17)

J.J. Abrams is pulling out all the stops again in the action-packed movie that Star Trek and all movie lovers will find enjoyable. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana and Simon Pegg round out the cast in this continuous of beloved movies of the past. Although it is a Star Trek movie, everyone who enjoys suspense, drama and action will want to see this sure to be summer hit.

  1. The Hangover: Part III (May 23)

The crazy group of boys is back for the end of this hilarious trilogy. Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms star in the last of the Hangover movies where the boys head back to Vegas to finish everything off. A bit more violent than the others, but not an ounce less crazy make this movie a must-see for all the comedy and Hangover fans out there.

  1. Fast and Furious 6 (May 24)

Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are back for the sixth Fast and Furious movie. Full of car chases, fights, and passion. This however, may be the most-intense and crazy Fast and Furious film yet, as the team of convicts ban together to bring down an even bigger monster than the ones that live inside them. For those who have kept up with the movies, or just want to see some serious action, Fast and Furious 6 is for you.

  1. This Is The End (June 12)

Seth Rogan, James Franco, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson star in this hilarious comedy about the end of the world. After being stuck in a house for what the boys think is the end of the world, they venture outside in LA to see the destruction and to test their friendships. With the funny men on board, this is sure to be a great summer movie to see.

  1. Monsters University (June 21)

The sequel to the Disney favorite, Monsters Inc. comes out this summer and is sure to be a movie the whole family will love. The storyline takes us back to when Sully and Mike were roommates in college, both trying to become amazing scarers, while handling the pressures of school and some friendly competition. It’s a must-see for those who loved the first.

  1. Despicable Me 2 (July 3)

Another great wholesome comedy sequel the family can enjoy brings back Steve Carrell as the voice of Gru and Kristen Wiig. This time the villain must help bring down another villain in the clever comedy. Oh, and the funny yellow minions are still there.

Summer blockbusters are always a great way to temporarily escape from reality. If you can’t make it to the theater, consider watching one of these hit’s predecessors on direct2tv or On Demand and enjoy all that the summer has in store.
