When it comes to kids’ entertainment, Disney is the biggest name on the block. That is because Disney movies are consistently high quality shows that you and your children will want to watch over and over again. However Disney makes more than just great cartoons. In alphabetical order, here are some of my children’s favorite live action Disney movies that are available to watch instantly on Netflix:

  1. 101 Dalmatians – The live action version of the classic cartoon was released in 1996. The story is the same however. The evil Cruella DeVil kidnaps fifteen Dalmatian puppies to turn them into a fur coat. However the puppy’s parents don’t intend to lose their children. Along the way more and more puppies are kidnapped until there are 99 puppies and two adult Dalmatians on the run from Cruella and her flunkies. A great exciting movie for kids of all ages. What child doesn’t love a gaggle of puppies?
  2. Air Bud Series – The first film was originally released in 1997; this series of live action movies is centered on a talented golden retriever named Buddy. From his adventures in sports to his puppies’ adventures in Air Buddies, the fun and humor never ends. A great show for kids who love dogs and sports.
  3. Avalon High – This 2010 made for TV movie is interesting. It takes the Camelot and King Arthur story and laces it in a modern high school. With an extensive plot and lots of mystery, teens will have fun figuring out who is who in this exciting film.
  4. Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2 & 3 – For kids who have seen the first film in this series, the sequels are a fun way to catch up with Chloe and Papi, the tiny talking dog stars of this film series. When the two dogs have a litter of puppies, things quickly get complicated. Follow the funny adventures of these pampered pooches.
  5. Camp Rock– This rocking Disney film series is great for aspiring music aficionados. Focusing on the poor but hopeful Mitchie, who has to work in the kitchen to get a spot in music camp, ids learn to work hard to get to their dreams.
  6. Cheetah Girls – A group of girls band together to form a singing career that takes them around the world. Another great series for the musically inclined child. From Spain to Bollywood these girls find their style and learn about the true meaning of friendship.
  7. Cow Belles – Real life actress sisters star in this movie about two spoiled teens that have to work on their father’s dairy farm. They learn the value of hard work and family.
  8. Crimson Wing – A documentary about flamingos, the beautiful scenery and colorful birds help to keep kids interested. A great learning film.
  9. Dadnapped – This goofy teen movie is spy meets writer. Melissa wants to spend quality time with her famous spy novel writer dad, but things go awry when crazy fans kidnap him! Now she and her friends have to think like spies to get him back. Featuring many of the Disney Channel stars kids love, this movie is great for tweens.
  10. Hatching Pete – When shy guy Pete has to take over as school mascot for his best friend he learns to be himself… as a chicken. By donning his suit the shy guy learns how to be confident and eventually discovers that there is nothing to be afraid of. A great tween movie.
  11. High School Musical – The big Disney hit of a few years ago, this series follows the musical adventures of high school kids as they preform plays and learn about friendship. Lots of singing and dancing in this series; great for musically inclined tweens.
  12. Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves – Following the hit movie where their kids get shrunk and have to find their way through the backyard jungle, this film focuses on the parent’s accidental journey into the big world of being tiny. As the parents fight to get their kids’ attention the rebellious teens decide to throw a party. However the teens learn to appreciate their parents in the process as disaster after disaster occurs. The parents also learn to trust their kids in this family friendly film.
  13. I’ll Be Home for Christmas – The child star of Home Improvement and voice of the Lion King is now a college student on his way home for Christmas. However the spoiled teen learns about the true meaning of the holiday as he fights to make his way home without any money or car. A fun holiday film.
  14. Inspector Gadget 2 – The already foolish antics of the part robot detective are expanded in this sequel. Kids love to see what gadget he will pull out next, but the silliness might be a little over the top for parents. The story is best for tweens and plays to that slap stick sense of humor.
  15. The Muppet Movie – If your kids love Kermit, Miss Piggy and the rest of the crazy Muppet bunch then they can’t miss this movie. With all the adventure and singing the Muppet films are known for the colorful puppets take over Hollywood.
  16. Princess Protection Program – When a princess is in danger she hides out in a rural area with the teenage daughter of the man protecting her. This funny story delves into finding friends in weird places and understanding what it means to walk in another person’s shoes. Sweet and funny, this is a great tween movie.
  17. Star Struck – When a pop star breaks down in a rural area he’s in for a shock. Used to being worshipped wherever he goes he has to deal with a girl who doesn’t care about fame and popularity. Along the way he learns what it means to have real friends. Great for tweens and teens.
  18. Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior – Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer in Disney form. The story of a girl fighting to become the most popular girl in school and the homecoming queen who learns she’s destined for even bigger things. She is the only one who can stop the invasion of evil spirits and save her town. The biggest catch? The invasion is the same day as the homecoming dance. Can she beat the bad guys and still be crowned queen? The exciting martial arts meets teen drama is great for tweens and teens alike. My kids’ favorite scene is when each of Wendy’s high school teachers is taken over by a good spirit to teach her kung fu skills. A nerdy English teacher turned into a dangerous fighting machine is hilarious to kids!
  19. Who Framed Rodger Rabbit –Set in the 1940s, this live action movie is groundbreaking as it also includes animation! When the animated rabbit, Rodger, is framed for murder who will help him? Well, gumshoe Eddie takes the case and ends up saving all the cartoons against a murderous villain. With lots of dark imagery and some sexual overtones this one is definitely not a show for young kids. But older kids and parents can get in on the action, adventure, suspense and stupidity when cartoons and the real world collide.
  20. Wings of Life – Another Disney documentary, this one follow the lives of things with wings. Butterflies, bats, hummingbirds and bees are all featured in this colorful documentary. Narrated by Meryl Streep this film is another great opportunity to share the beauty of nature with your kids.

As you can see, Disney has more to offer than just cartoons. With live action films that will charm and amuse the whole family you are sure to find a new favorite in one of these flicks. Stream a few and see what gem you and your kids can uncover.
